Design Philosophy

We endeavor to design structures and spaces that look right, that perform efficiently, and that function exceptionally well for the people that inhabit them.  A design that checks these boxes is, ostensibly, a success, but for us, there is one more element that makes all the difference... delight.

It is this most human of factors that drives our design work and describes our sensibility.  So, while we're not likely to propose a two-story entry foyer (dramatic does not equate to delightful), we might very well integrate a “secret” reading nook tucked under a stairway with soft pillows and built-in lighting (sized to also serve as over-flow bedding in a pinch,) or it might be as small a detail as the shelves in a linen closet being notched to accommodate an upright vacuum.  We love to think about such things, large and small, that make people happy.

Approach to Construction

We are conscientious builders in the most literal sense.  This means that we are thoughtful users of raw materials, we execute faithfully both the design and good building practices, and we actively choose to not cut corners.

Equally important, we are conscientious in terms of our impact on others.  Especially in the case of additions or renovations when we’re working on homes that our clients are living in, we are conscientious about cleaning, about minimizing noise (or scheduling it) wherever possible, and about being, to the extent that we can and in the broadest sense, low-impact to those around us.

Team

Dave

Architectural Designer

As an architectural designer, Dave obsesses upon the overlap between three considerations: how a designed space makes us feel, how it looks, and how it functions.   He began thinking about three-dimensional design as an art major focused on sculpture at Middlebury College.

Narayan

Advanced Carpenter

Narayan is a mindful craftsman with a broad range of construction skills developed over the years with several Vermont-based crews.  Equally important, he brings to his daily work his good spirit and kindness.  His interest in hands-on work began while he was an applied media art major at Edinboro University of PA.

Mike

Apprentice

While Mike is new to hands-on construction, his interest in it developed during his previous stint managing contractors for a Burlington-based property management company.  A graduate of UVM, he brings lots of curiosity and positive energy, both soulful and physical, to our crew.
